Volunteer Opportunities
WC&S has great ways for you to join us as a volunteer in our mission of ending intimate partner violence in the lives of women and children in our region.
Our direct service volunteer opportunities require completion of a 40 hour domestic violence training program. To learn more about direct service volunteering, please call our Volunteer Coordinator at 412-687-8017 ext. 335.
WC&S also has opportunities for individuals and groups to do volunteerism in support of our agency's special events or to do volunteerism in support of non-direct service needs such as gardening, landscaping, maintenance, cleaning, preparing meals, preparing cell phone donations for shipment and organizing drives.
Non Direct Service Volunteer Jobs
Cell Phone Sorting
This activity requires an ability to stand, bend and lift at least 30 pounds. Women's Center and Shelter receives donations of cell phones that must then be sorted, categorized, boxed and shipped. The Center earns an average of $2 per phone. Volunteers are also encouraged to organize a cell phone drive to collect old, damaged or unused phones from friends, family, neighbors, etc. and bring them with you when you come to volunteer!
Cooking
Cooking a meal for residents in shelter can be done is several ways. The Center can provide the food for the meal or volunteers may organize a group that will provide, cook and serve the meal. Cooking for residents is much like the gift of breakfast in bed or taking someone out for dinner or lunch. The women typically cook their own meals, so this is a great way to show you care and give them the night off! Rules of confidentiality are very important when volunteering in shelter.
Children's Party
Hosting a children's party is a great way to do something special for the children in the shelter. Help to create a fun, party-like atmosphere by bringing along pizza or ice cream. You could create a theme night or bring along an arts and crafts project for a night of fun. The sky's the limit!
Landscaping
Depending on the season, this activity could include preparing the grounds for planting or for winter, planting flowers, bulbs or shrubs or weeding. To participate, volunteers must be able to stand, bend and kneel. Volunteers may provide the plants and supplies (rakes, gloves, bags, broom, etc.) or they may be provided by WC&S.
Cleaning
Cleaning activities can include washing walls and baseboards, cleaning and reorganizing a storage area or focusing on an area of the building such as the kitchen or children’s playroom. As with all volunteer opportunities, volunteers may bring cleaning supplies or the Center can provide them.
Product Sorting
Women's Center and Shelter receives donations of assorted toiletries, linens and other items on our wish list, which must then be sorted into categories for storage and distribution to clients. This activity requires an ability to stand, bend and lift at least 30 pounds. Volunteers are encouraged to organize a product drive to collect wish list items and bring them with you when you come to volunteer.
You must phone 412-687-8017 extension 335 to be scheduled for a volunteer activity. Click here to take a look at the volunteer events calendar.
