Thank you for your outstanding support on #GivingTuesdayNow!
Thank you for donating to Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh on May 5, 2020 during GivingTuesday’s global day of unity, #GivingTuesdayNow. We are thrilled to announce that 275 donors gave over $44,000 to support survivors of intimate partner violence and their children. And thanks to a generous matching grant from the A.J. Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust, the first $10,000 raised was matched dollar for dollar, bringing our total to an astounding $54,000!
Thank you for giving survivors of IPV and their children the gift of safety in an unusually unsafe time.
Your support of Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh is more important than ever. There has been a sharp rise in intimate partner violence amid global coronavirus lockdowns. As IPV is based on power and control, abusers often try to exert even more power when they feel a lack of control (due to illness, job loss, etc.). The number of crisis Hotline calls we receive each week has dropped dramatically since the stay-at-home orders were put in place, suggesting that many IPV victims are struggling to find a safe place and time to make a call now that they are around their abusive partners more often.
WC&S has responded to this crisis by incorporating new initiatives into our existing programs, including:
- Partnerships with local media sources, stores, and our community partners to ensure that those experiencing IPV are aware that help is always available;
- Creating a COVID-19 Response & Resources webpage to give survivors and the community access to vital information about the intersection of IPV and the COVID-19 epidemic;
- Implementing a text messaging feature on our 24-Hour Hotline and a chat feature on our website to give people a safe, alternative means of contacting WC&S; and
- Temporarily expanding our battering intervention programming to provide counseling, education and tools over the phone to people who use abusive behaviors.
With your support, we will continue to respond to the changing needs of those affected by IPV – during the crisis and beyond. Perhaps the best way to describe the impact of your gift is through the recent words of survivors:
“I want to hug you right now! But I won’t because of the pandemic. This support is such a blessing!”
“Thank you SO much. Everything Women’s Center & Shelter has done to help me has been amazing, and the only way I’ve made it through some times.”
